The Centenary of Hungarian Sociology

The beginnings of the professional sociology in Hungary goes back to January 1900, the first issue of the Huszadik Század (Twentieth Century) and to January 1901, the foundation of the Társadalomtudományi Társaság (Society of Social Sciences), the first community of Hungarian social thought and science. The 100th anniversary is an occasion for remembering the main characteristics, the greatest representatives and the outstanding achievements of the first period, that of the two decades of the last century in the history of the Hungarian sociology. The remembrance focuses on the great sociological theories, and attempts to understand and conceptualise the main social processes of the turn of the century. The author emphasises the impact of the political approaches on sociological thought. Providing an overview of the Huszadik Század, he calls attention to the importance of this periodical in the Hungarian cultural history.

Image of Roma in the Hungarian Society

The article presents findings of a study from a national sample on the attitudes members of the majority population reveal with regard to the mobility chances of the Roma population.

Responses suggest three ways of upgrading: 1. a self-reliance strategy on the basis of internal resources, ignoring solidarity 2. a path of assimilation 3. an integration track implying both the maintenance of Roma identity and social help from outside.

The study outlines complex cognitive structures leading to either the acceptence or refusal of any ways of adaptations explained above.

In the Net of Aczél.
Contribution to Understanding of the Operation of Social Capital

In paper I start with some explanations why in socialism politics was more network-oriented than it is under "normal" circumstances (under which it is network oreinted to a great degree). I argue that this was partly the consequence of a special feature of path dependent development of the post 56-revolution, i.e. the coming to power of a socialist politician (his name was György Aczél (in English Steel) who was a artist in netwroking. This historical accident (on top of the Hungarian network oriented culture and the special political circumstanes) created a fertile soil of the high inertia development of network capital which survived the transformation from socialism to capitalism which - partly due to the high inertia of network capital - retained the network oriented nature of pre-postsocialism.
