A Loose Social Network: Hungarians in Bucharest
A recenzió Rostás Zoltán Bukaresti magyarság – alulnézetből című monográfiáját mutatja be, amely a román főváros magyar közösségének közel egy évszázadát rekonstruálja oral history forrásokra támaszkodva. A kötet a klasszikus szociográfia, a mikro- és társadalomtörténet metszéspontján helyezkedik el, ugyanakkor fontos hozzájárulás a migrációszociológiai vizsgálatokhoz is. A kisebbségi létformákat nem normatív asszimilációs keretben, hanem differenciált identitásstratégiák összefüggésében vizsgálja. A recenzió amellett érvel, hogy a monográfia jelentős mértékben gazdagítja a romániai magyar diaszpóráról alkotott ismereteinket, és új perspektívát kínál a kelet-közép-európai urbanizáció és migráció kutatásához is.
This review examines Zoltán Rostás’s monograph Bukaresti magyarság – alulnézetből (Hungarians in Bucharest: From Below), which draws on oral history sources to reconstruct nearly a century of the Hungarian community in the Romanian capital. Positioned at the intersection of sociography, microhistory, and social history, the volume also makes a significant contribution to the sociology of migration. Rather than framing minority existence within a normative paradigm of assimilation, Rostás analyses differentiated identity strategies shaped by shifting social and institutional contexts. The review argues that the monograph substantially enriches our understanding of the Hungarian diaspora in Romania and offers a new perspective on urbanization and migration processes in Central and Eastern Europe.
